The Four Agreements Do Your Best

That was the whole point of the book. To inform us about the agreements and show us four powerful agreements that will help us break the agreements that come from fear and exhaust our energy. If you live your life with these four chords, you will change your life in an incredible way, and instead of living in a dream of hell, you will create a new dream – your personal dream from heaven. If you do your best, you free yourself from guilt and shame. You feel great about yourself when you`ve given your best effort. The fourth agreement allows the first three agreements to become deeply entrenched habits. Repetition and practice make you a master, but don`t expect to be able to master these chords immediately. Don`t expect you to always be impeccable with your word, or never take anything personally, or never make assumptions. Your habits are too strong and rooted in your mind.

Do the best you can. So use your word correctly. Use the word to share your love. Use white magic, starting with yourself. Tell yourself how wonderful you are, how great you are. Tell yourself how much you love each other. Use the word to break all those little juvenile arrangements that make you suffer. “If they do their best in the search for personal freedom, in search of self-esteem, you will see that it is only a matter of time before you find what you are looking for.” The Four Agreements, Chapter 5 The way to avoid making assumptions is to ask questions. Make sure the communication is clear.

If you don`t understand, ask. Have the courage to ask questions until you are clear about what you can be, and even then you don`t think you know everything there is to know about a particular situation. Ruiz says, “If you do your best to do it, you take action because you appreciate the action.” The action is to live to the fullest. Your best doesn`t mean trying more than you can now (the old “Give 110 percent”). More than doing your best, exhaust your personal energy. But less than doing your best leaves you with guilt and regret. The Master replied: “If you can do your best in two hours of meditation, but you spend eight hours instead, you get tired, you lose the point and you will not enjoy your life. Do your best, and you may learn that no matter how long you meditate, you can live, love and be happy. If you keep these four chords together and live, you`ll have a good life. You`ll control your life 100%. If you fall, if you try to maintain these agreements, do not judge yourself. Get up and close the deal.

If you do your best, you take action without expecting a reward. Rewards will come, but they`re not your ultimate goals. You just enjoy playing at the peak of your skills. Wherever you go, you`ll find people who lie to you, and when your conscience grows, you`ll find out you`re lying too. Don`t expect people to tell you the truth because they lie to themselves. You have to trust yourself and decide whether or not to believe what someone is telling you. In all circumstances, do your best, no more and no less. But remember that your best will never be equal any moment.

Your best depends on whether you feel wonderful and happy, or angry, angry, sick, tired or jealous. They were born with the right to be happy. You were born with the right to love, to enjoy and to share your love. You`re alive, so take your life and enjoy it. Say no if you want to say no, and yes, if you want to say yes. You have the right to be you. You can only be if you do your best. Always doing their best is the deal that everyone can make. As your best, indeed, this is the only thing you can do.

And the best thing you can do doesn`t mean you sometimes give 80 percent and other times you only give 20 percent. You always give 100% — that`s always your intention — it`s just that you`re constantly changing.
